El Velero, located on the beautiful Avenida Principal of Isla de La Piedra in Mazatlán, is a true family-friendly seafood restaurant that effortlessly combines fresh coastal flavors with a warm, inviting atmosphere. This charming eatery specializes in a diverse array of mouthwatering seafood classics that reflect the rich culinary heritage of the region.
From the moment you step into El Velero, you’re greeted by an ambiance that feels like a serene beachside escape—unpretentious, relaxed, and infused with a bohemian spirit that makes every meal feel like a celebration. The attentive, friendly staff add a personal touch, ensuring that families, couples, and solo travelers alike feel right at home.
The menu is a treasure trove of delicious options sure to satisfy every craving. Signature dishes like Pescado Zarandeado and its variations—Zarandeado Fish and Pargo Zarandeado—stand out for their smoky, savory glazing and perfectly grilled texture that leaves you craving each smoky, slightly charred bite. The Ceviche Especial bursts with fresh, zesty citrus notes and vibrant seafood flavors, while Pescado Frito delivers satisfying crispy crunch paired with tender fish inside.
For shrimp lovers, El Velero spoils you with choices: the generous Shrimp Cocktail Large comes brimming with juicy, chilled shrimp in a tangy and spicy sauce that tingles your palate; the Shrimp Burger offers a playful, beachy twist with succulent shrimp nestled in a toasted bun; while the Camarones Imperiales and the fiery Camarones A la Diabla offer a bold, memorable experience full of rich seasoning and heat.
Breakfast aficionados will appreciate options like the Huevos Rancheros and the comforting Red or Green Chilaquiles, each dish serving as a perfect start whether you’re fueling up for a day on the beach or looking for a relaxed morning meal. Other flavorful standouts include the tropical sweetness of Camarones Al Coco and refreshing beverages like the tangy Limonada de Pacifico and bright Agua de Naranja, ideal for washing down your meal or simply quenching the thirst brought on by the sun and sand.
Customers consistently sing the praises of El Velero’s exceptional service and relaxed environment. As Janine Garrant notes, the restaurant not only caters to the taste buds but also family needs by providing free beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, and toys for kids—making it a true destination for a fun day by the sea. The resilience of El Velero is also inspiring; despite damage from recent storms, the establishment bounced back swiftly, showing dedication to its guests and community.
The sense of genuine hospitality shines through, with guests like J Lee praising the warm family-run vibe and friendly staff like Chuey, whose attentive service elevates the experience. Brick Owens beautifully captures the essence of El Velero as “a bohemian oasis on a gentle beach,” highlighting the authenticity and rustic charm that sets it apart from more polished, commercial venues.
Whether you’re craving a perfectly grilled fish infused with smoky flavors, a refreshing shrimp cocktail, or simply a relaxed meal with your feet in the sand, El Velero delivers a multifaceted seafood experience enriched by heartfelt service and local character. For anyone visiting Mazatlán or venturing to Isla de La Piedra, this gem is an unforgettable culinary retreat where the food tastes like the sea and every visit feels like coming home.

We had an amazing time! Free chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards and toys for the kids etc. Great food, atmosphere, prices and exceptional service! An added bonus is they take either cash or a card for payment.
We heard El Veleros was "washed away" in a recent storm... NOT TRUE! They did suffer a lot of damage and they lost a lot of sand but after 10 days of hard work they are back up and running! Go support them--it is a WONDERFUL PLACE.
A gem of a place. So fun. The staff were super attentive and pleasant. My husband had the steak and loved it. Our hosts shared a shrimp salad in an edible Parmesan bowl and devoured it. A 10/10 in my books.
This place is Fabulous! We came over to Stone Island, on the ferry ($3/RT). Walk along the beach and stop here!! Nice people run the place, Miguel (Michael) is the owner, the place is run by family. Chuey has been our waiter and WE ALL LOVE HIM!!! He's helpful, polite, friendly Cokes in the bottle are $2 USD. Chips and Guac is about $6 or $7 USD- it is a big plate and it is delicious! I posted pictures of the menu, the prices are in Pesos. There is no minimum. The beach area is shallow, so you don't have to worry about the kids being carried out to sea. They will hook you up with ocean toys for the kids. This place is relaxing and fun. Clean bathrooms. I've been here before and I'll come to this same place again and again.
A bohemian oasis on a gentle beach. It has the primitive feel of early beach life. Less finished so to speak. We visited 4 times over the two weeks we were in Mazatlan. Everyone of the 11 that came with us had excellent meals! The breakfast was superb. Try the pancakes and the french toast on different days. Garlic fish fillet, see picture, was mouth watering.
We had a great time spending the day here. The service was excellent and so was the beach! Definitely coming back next time we cruise!
Had a great time here. Staff was very accommodating. the view was great. Got a bucket of beers right on the beach, margaritas, food, and watched the kids play in the surf. Will definitely be back next time.
